HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Southern Mississippi has hired Bill McGillis as its new athletic director.
The 50-year-old McGillis comes to the Golden Eagles after six years as an associate athletic director at South Florida. He worked mostly with the football, baseball and softball programs and also was responsible for marketing, ticket sales, licensing, merchandising and communications.
McGillis replaces Jeff Hammond, whose contract was allowed to expire on June 30. McGillis was the athletic director at Evansville from 2002 to 2007.
Southern Miss president Rodney Bennett said in a statement that McGillis is a "seasoned and experienced athletic administrator who has a proven record of helping student-athletes accomplish their academic and athletic goals."
