Preparation for defense of the 2012 Gulf South Conference football championship gets underway when West Alabama begins spring practice at Tiger Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The first of 15 workouts, this one in helmets, gets started at 2:40 p.m. and is open to the public. The 2013 UWA Spring Football Game is set for April 6 at 10 a.m. at Tiger Stadium.
The UWA Alumni Association will also be selling $10 crayfish plates on Tiger Hill across from the stadium during the spring game. UWA baseball and softball teams are also hosting GSC doubleheaders that day, with softball hosting West Georgia and baseball North Alabama. First pitch for both is 3 p.m.
“We have had a great offseason and have seen a lot of guys get stronger,” UWA head coach Will Hall said. “We have lot of depth and this promises to be a great spring. I encourage all Tiger fans to come out and see us as much as possible.”
The Tigers will put on pads for the first time on March 13. Including the spring game, 12 workouts will be in pads. Hall and his staff will hold four practices, including an April 13 scrimmage, following the spring game.
“I am really looking forward to the competition at quarterback,” Hall said. “Gary Johnston will be held out this spring, but will be back in the fall. Kyle Caldwell is back and Clint Hatten has been impressive in winter workouts. Dustyn Moseley is a redshirt freshman that will get a look as well.”
Hall said the main offensive focus in the spring will be on improving the passing game and taking up the play at wide receiver a notch.
“We have to get better in passing game. We have led league in rushing the last two years, but have be better throwing the football,” Hall said. “We have a lot of speed at running back and the offensive line has five seniors returning, but we have to step our game up at receiver.”
Other than finding defensive backs to fill holes left in the secondary by graduation, Hall said “we just want to continue what we are doing on defense.”
“Of course we lost a great one in Ridge Wilson as far as rushing the passer, but we have players who can step in there that we have confidence in,” Hall said. “One of my biggest concerns is finding folks to fill the void left by Otha Foster and Rico Jernighan at the safety spots.”
The Tigers open the 2013 season Sept. 7 with a home game against Clark Atlanta.
