– NCAA Division II and CBS Sports Network have announced their regular-season television schedule for the 2013 football season and defending Gulf South Conference champion West Alabama will play Florida Tech in a nationally televised game on Thursday, Sept. 19.
The game at Pirate Stadium in Melbourne will kick off at 7 p.m. (CDT) and will be the first Gulf South Conference game in school history for Florida Tech.
“The positive momentum just keeps going,” UWA head coach Will Hall said. “This is another thing that hasn't happened at UWA in a long time. It's great to have a chance to play on national television and to play in the state Florida.
“We know it will be a challenge to play an up and coming program,” Hall said, “but it is a tremendous opportunity to showcase how far we've come as a program and to show people all around the country the good things that are happening at UWA.”
The six-game Thursday night slate opens Sept. 5 and features seven teams from last year's championship field, including two national semifinalists. Teams appearing in this year's television package combined for a 102-30 (.773) overall record last season.
“This year's package of games offers a tremendous representation of Division II football,” said Frank Condino, chair of the Division II Football Committee and athletics director at Indiana (Pa.).
Division II enters the eighth year of its partnership with CBS Sports Network in 2013, with nearly 25 percent of the division's football-playing members having enjoyed national television exposure during the course of the agreement.
“Institutions from seven different conferences, plus one independent, are represented this year,” NCAA Associate Director of Division II Josh Looney said. “Over the past seven years, national telecasts have originated from 35 different Division II football stadiums, and we're adding five new venues to that list this year.”
