The annual University of West Alabama Red-White Spring Football Game and Alumni Crawfish Boil is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Tiger Stadium.
Concluding the first spring drills under head coach Brett Gilliland and his staff, the Annual Red-White Game will be a controlled offense versus defense scrimmage. The offense will be wearing white and the defense red jerseys.
"As coaches, this is a time for us to see how this group responds to a game type atmosphere," Gilliland said. "Even though the scrimmage will be an offense versus defense structure, we will have a scoring system for both sides of the ball."
The offense will score six points for a touchdown, one for an extra point kick, three for a field goal, one for an "explosive play", which is a run of 12 yards or more or a pass of 16 yards or more, and a point for three consecutive first downs.
The defense will score seven points for a touchdown, two for a safety, three for a turnover, two points for a sack or a turnover on downs, one for a three-and-out, one for a PAT block and three for a blocked field goal. The defense can also score for red zone stops, including four points for not allowing a touchdown or field goal when the offense begins a series inside the 35-yard line and three points for holding the offense to a field goal less than 30 yards .
"We are excited for Tiger Nation to get a glimpse of the 2014 football team," Gilliland said. "The players have worked very hard over the course of spring drills, so we are going to let them have some fun in a game-like atmosphere."
The 2014 spring game for the two-time defending Gulf South Conference champions' scrimmage won't be the only activity on campus that day.
The UWA men's soccer team is hosting its annual 5K Run/Walk at 8 a.m. Saturday. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Anyone interested in participating can contact coach Matthew Thorne at email@example.com.
