Second-ranked West Florida held of a late West Alabama scare in the second game to complete a sweep of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader over the Tigers, 11-1 and 2-1, Saturday at Jim Spooner Field.
West Florida improved to 31-6 overall, 22-4 in the GSC, with the sweep. West Alabama dropped to 27-13 and 15-10.
The Argonauts pounded out 13 hits on the way to winning the first game, but had to survive a pitcher's due in the series finale.
Neither team was able to get to second-game starters Jordan DiLorenzo for UWF or Fernando Gonzalez for UWA until the Argos took advantage of three walks, a sacrifice fly and a tough error call to go ahead 2-0 after six innings.
Daniel Bolte singled to open the seventh for West Alabama and Luigi Mendez doubled to give the Tigers runners at second and third with no outs in their final at bat. Bolte scored on a wild pitch, but DiLorenzo coaxed a strikeout and two ground balls to improve to 10-0 for the season.
Dayan Rodriguez (6-0) earned the win in the first game. West Alabama starters Zach Parks (7-3) and Fernandez (6-2) were charged with the losses. Fernandez, Logan Colvin and Brock Ward allowed just three West Florida hits in the second game, but combined to walk six.
Jack Cockrum had two of UWA's four hits, a pair of doubles, in the first game. Bolte had two hits for the Tigers in the finale.
Cliff Covington went 3-for-3, Chase Kiefer 3-for-4 and Austin Southall 2-for-4 with two runs batted in for the Argos in the first game.
Both teams close the GSC regular season on the road next weekend. West Florida travels to Delta State for a three-game set. After a midweek trip to Montevallo, West Alabama finishes the regular season at Alabama-Huntsville.
