GULLANE, Scotland (AP) -- Lee Westwood is just 18 holes away from claiming his first major championship. The talented 40-year-old English golfer shot a 1-under 70 to take the lead after the third round of the British Open.
Westwood's 3-under total put him two shots up on playing partner Tiger Woods and Hunter Mahan.
Woods was tied for the lead with Westwood when he hit his second shot on the par-5 17th into bunker and bogeyed the hole, while Westwood birdied. Woods shot a 1-over 72 to tie Mahan for second place.
Mahan equaled the best round of the day with a 3-under 68 on the difficult, dried-out Muirfield course. That earned him a pairing in the last group with Westwood in the final round.
Masters champ Adam Scott is alone at even par after a 70. Zach Johnson and Angel Cabrera head up a group at 1-over.
Phil Mickelson is five back after shooting a 1-over 72.
