Air Conditioner Request

'I need an air conditioner!'

An air conditioner, that's what 69-year-old Jonas Amerson says he needs, but can't seem to get.

'I don't have an air conditioner and I'm about to burn up!'

(Reporter) 'What is this area?'

(Amerson) 'This is the bedroom.'

The fans that are in Amerson's bedroom are the only sources of air he has to cool his entire house. Right now, all three fans are in his bedroom because that's where he spends a lot of time. However, with one of the fans not generating a lot of cool air, Amerson says what he needs most is help to truly beat the heat!

'They're just not cutting it, when it's 100 degrees outside, it's not cutting it,' says Amerson. 'I only get a little over $700 a month and guys who don't work get the same amount as I did when I worked.'

Early last year Amerson says the air conditioner at his house stopped working. Last spring he first requested an air conditioner from Multi-County Community Service Agency. That's when he was told that he needed to secure some documentation.

'They said, 'Go get a birth certificate. Go get a social security card. I did that.'

By January of this year Amerson says he turned in all the information needed to MCCSA officials and reentered an air conditioner request, but like many, he's still waiting.

"We have issued already since April, 103 air conditioners and this is just in Lauderdale County. In addition to taking applications, the workers have to do home visits,' says MCCSA Deputy Director, Shirley Deville.

DeVille says the three MCCSA employees who handle Lauderdale County's air conditioner requests are working hard to meet the growing demand. As for Mr. Amerson's request, she says she plans to check on it.

'I don't what I have to do to get an air conditioner,' says Amerson.

Last year MCCSA issued a total of 92 air conditioners to needy residents within the 9 counties that it serves. So far this year, more than 100 have been issued in Lauderdale County alone. There are currently 84 names on the waiting list.

There but for the grace of God could go any one of us. What concerns me more than a man asking for help is the people making some of these nasty comments.

With the exception of those few with open and giving hearts that have posted in these comments, has it not occured that those expressing greed, contempt, and hatred toward another less fortunate individiual will be the same ones begging for an air conditioner in the afterlife? You don't always know who is knocking on your door.

The headline of the story is incorrect, it wasn't a request, it was a demand!!

I think this story just hit a nerve because a large percentage of people are tired of working, taxed, and asked for donations, just to carry the load of people who won't take care of themselves. I'm not saying this guy is one of them, just that the hard working people of this Country are fed up with the free loaders and the Federal Gov't wanting to take care of everyone, regardless of the cost.

You are pitiful. You should have spent more time in school instead of on the skreet. Your grammar, punctuation, spelling, ebonics are ridiculous. What's wrong with commenting on "Obama care, system" that's exactly the problem. 'Gimme, gimme, gimme...dat all? Gimme more!' It's never enough - - I bet I support you, too. I get 35% less of my paycheck to support the likes of you and him and every other user!! We need to stand up and stop giving handouts. It's no wonder they expect it. Give an inch, they want a mile. "Give a man a fish, he eats for one day, teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime." TIME TO GET BACK TO TEACHING, AND STOP GIVING!!!!

Really? Where is his family members? I bet they all ride the system! Ask Obama, he is giving out cell phones, so an A\C shouldn't be any problem! However I digress, he is a senior citizen, and we will be judge on how we treat the young and the elderly!

I'm not trying to be ugly at all, I promise. I just want to know why ppl think someone owes them things like air conditioners. Just the fact that he is complaining.. Put your name on the list and if it comes, it comes, if it doesn't it doesn't, no need to call News Center 11! I know that this man is elderly, but in my eyes it further lets me know that he has probably lived without AC before in his lifetime! I have to go to work daily, it just isn't fair to the rest of the world, I'm actually working for these air conditioners, food, etc! Putting food on the same ppl's tables who break into our homes or rob us! You mean to tell me that he couldnt have saved up for an air conditioner since last spring?! He could've taken $10/month from the $700 that he is GIVEN! Seriously!

Ifthis man is 70 yrs. old, he is getting all the benefits other people his age are receiving. They reported he had to get a birth certificate and ss card before he could apply last year. If he was that bad off why did he wait until he needed an a/c to apply for those benefits? Come on. Sounds to me like this is a new push to prevent voter I.D. No record of birth. You know, my mom had to get all this when she applied for ss benefits. No record of her birth either.

I don't understand why if he was so blessed with 2, why didn't he donate one of them back to some other family that is going without. After all, there are 83 other people on that waiting list, so why is he being greedy? Oh yeah, I forgot, he had "double-trouble" so I guess he deserves double air conditioners. Give me a break!
