Car Battery Thefts

Local residents are being cautioned following the theft of car batteries. Within the last month Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie says about a handful of batteries have been stolen from underneath the hoods of cars parked at houses. So far, all of the crimes have been committed at night.

'When the person's asleep someone is able to gain access to the interior of the car,' says Sheriff Sollie. 'Open up the hood latch and remove the battery. Quite often they'll even cut the cables and remove the battery in a quick manner.'

Within the last month Sheriff Sollie says the thefts have occurred within the county and city of Meridian.

'We haven't made any arrests. So, we haven't been able to question anybody about the motive.'

Whether the stolen batteries are being used by thieves for personal use or to be sold, Sheriff Sollie says it's wrong and he's advising residents to take necessary precautions to prevent any more of these thefts in the future.

'Go ahead and lock your car, even though you're on your property at your house. Lock the car and make it even more difficult for anyone to steal from you.'

Although the suspects in the car battery theft cases remain unknown, Sheriff Sollie says in general, it's especially important for parents to know what their children are doing.

'We'd just like to remind parents to get in your child's business. Know where your child is at. Know where your child is going and know what time your child arrives home.'

Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call the Lauderdale County Crimestoppers line. That number is (601) 485-1860.
