Traffic totals are being released for the holiday travel period in East Mississippi. The Fourth of July travel period started last Wednesday night at 6 and ended Sunday at midnight.
During that time troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol Office in Meridian issued 1,034 tickets and 18 DUI's. They also made two felony arrests and worked 29 accidents which involved 14 injuries and one fatal. The fatal crash happened Saturday night in Newton County. Mickey Yates, who was the Greenfield Volunteer Fire Chief , died in that wreck. It happened around 8:45 Saturday night on Highway 492 near Evans Tabernacle Road.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol Office in Meridian is known as Troop H. It covers Lauderdale, Clarke, Kemper, Neshoba, Newton, Scott, Smith, Jasper and Leake counties.
