Fire Destroys House in Lauderdale County

Lauderdale County, Miss. A Lauderdale County home has been destroyed by fire. It occurred around 9:20 Wednesday morning at a house on Lake Street. The fire caused a cloud of smoke that could be seen for miles.

Ed Wood, who lives across the street from the house, was one of the first to notice it.

"I smelled something back there and I said, 'What in the world is somebody burning something back there,' because I knew it rained yesterday. I said, 'Surely, ain't nobody burning nothing this early in the morning!"

That's when Wood says his brother told him about the fire.

"Well, they were all running around out there by the time I got out here, and a little girl that lives there walked down the street; I don't know where she went," says Ray Wood.

When firefighters arrived flames were showing.

"When we got here we found that the house was approximately 70% involved," says Lauderdale County Fire Coordinator, Allan Dover. He says the good thing is that no one was hurt.

"When we arrived here there was an 18 wheeler parked here Thank God that someone left the keys and we were able to move it and get it out of the way. 'We had some reports that someone was inside, but as soon as I got here everyone had left the home."

Volunteers from the: Meehan, Lost Gap, South, Suqualena, Clarkdale and Collinsville Volunteer Fire Departments all responded to the blaze.

"It was a great loss because when you arrive and 70% of a 1500 square foot structure is involved, pretty much all you can do is hold it in place," says Dover.

At this time it's unknown how long it will take investigators to determine the exact cause.
