The shooting happened at 164 Otho Roberts Road. It was just before 10:30 Tuesday night when the man who owns the mobile home, J.C. Roberts, was shot while at his front door.
'The guy had just come in from church and all the sudden banging on the door,' says Sheriff James Moore. 'They kicked the door open to be met by gunshots. So, he was really surprised. '
In all, Roberts was shot three times. Sheriff Moore says the three suspects were all black males in their 20's and 30's. At the time they were all wearing dark clothes, dark hats and blue bandanas across their faces.
'The guys that came in were not really looking for the homeowner, they were looking for someone they thought could be here."
After shooting the homeowner, Sheriff Moore says the three held five other people at the house at gunpoint while they ransacked the house and searched it. Ultimately, he says they did not find the person they were looking for, but did steal from the house.
'At this time we're not 100% or sure what they did take. That's still under investigation.'
Sheriff Moore says the motive is thought to be drug related. Once out of the house he says the three fled on foot.
'I want to say to anyone who has any information about this that they need to come forward because there are three very dangerous people out on the street walking around.'
Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest or arrests in this case is asked to call the Kemper County Sheriff's Department at (601) 743-4881.
As of midday Friday J.C. Roberts was still listed in critical condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Meanwhile, Sheriff James Moore says the three suspects could face charges related to aggravated assault and home invasion.
