Meridian Murder: Mother Seeks Answers

Meridian, Miss. "It hurts every day to let them think that they've done got away with it," says Ella Cole. Her 34-year-old son, Nathan, was discovered shot to death at 1005 27th Avenue on Aug. 15, 2013.

Cole says she's haunted by the fact that the person or people responsible for her son's death are not behind bars.

According to Cole, her son was discovered shot to death inside a boarding house where he was staying at the time. Although the discovery was made by one of Nathan's cousins, who stopped by to check on him, Cole feels that someone else who lived at the house should know what happened.

"I know that with six people living in there, somebody's going to hear them shots," Ella Cole said.

Suffering at least one gunshot to the head, Cole says so far, police have not released a motive nor made an arrest in the case.

"I gave them some information where they should've went and checked out, and they probably would've had somebody by now, but they're not doing that," says Cole. "They'll tell me something just to keep me calm like, 'Oh Ms. Cole, we're doing whatever we can do, but my supervisor's done gave me this here; I've got this stack of cases,' and all of that. What about my child?"

According to Assistant Chief James Sharpe, Meridian police sympathize with Ella Cole's loss. He also assures us that an investigation into the shooting death of Nathan Cole is very active with investigators continuing to re-examine evidence.

Meanwhile, one year after her son's death, Cole says her biggest wish is simple.

"I want to see justice. I want to see justice!" she said.

According to a preliminary investigation into the case, Nathan Cole was discovered shot once in the head in his bed shortly after 9 a.m. on August 15, 2013. Investigators estimate that the shooting occurred sometime between
1 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. that day. Ella Cole says officials told her that her son was asleep when he was shot.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the East Mississippi Crimestoppers line at 855-485-8477, or if you live within the city of Meridian simply call 311.
