York Elections

Municipal elections are being held across the state of Alabama Tuesday. In two coastal counties, they're being delayed because of Hurricane Isaac.
In the rest of the state they proceeded as planned. In fact, there are early indications of a high voter turnout in the city of York.

Starting at 7 a.m. candidates and others with keen interest in the election greeted voters outside the polling site across from York City Hall.

Restricted by cones, which kept them at least thirty feet away from the polling entrance, some who gathered outside the polls were there to support candidates and others to support a cause.

'I'm supporting the sale of beer on Sundays,' says Starling Perryman of York. 'I think we need some more revenue in this town.'

The sale of alcoholic beverages on Sundays in York is a special election item. If approved, city manager Tim Sweezey says it's unknown exactly how much money this referendum could generate for the city.

'Quite frankly I don't know, but I do know that it'll be more than nothing which is what we're getting now. So, I think that'll be relatively impressive,' says Sweezey.

In order for the sale of alcohol on Sundays to be allowed in York, more than 50% of the voters must approve it. If that does happen, Sweezey says this ordinance could officially take effect this Sunday.

As for the regular items on the ballot, York's mayor and four out of the five city council members are being challenged. Dianne Ruffin Green is seeking the District 5 seat. She says the lack of growth in York prompted her to seek the office.

'The problem is, I really can't say and I really don't want to say and I really don't want to point fingers, but it's just a problem. I'll just put it that way,' says Green.

'I feel that, if we as the mayor and council would've worked together, we would've been able to accomplish a whole lot more, but due to other agendas, it just did not work out the way I expected it should,' says Mayor Glenda Dubose.

Polls in Alabama will close at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
