Carthage, MS - July 11, 2014
On Friday, August 15th and Saturday, August 16th, 2014, Carthage Main Street and the Leake County Foundation will unite with artists from multiple Mississippi regions, walks of life, age ranges, and arts disciplines to present the second annual Old School Arts Festival at the Old Carthage Elementary School. “The festival, having grown exponentially in one year, is abuzz with many new and exciting prospects. There will be something for every age range to enjoy, including the illustrious $500 Cash Giveaway. And entry to the festival is free of charge,” says Russell Baty, Carthage Main Street Manager.
The Festival doors will open on Friday evening at 6pm for a complimentary open dialogue discussion, and Leake County premiere screening of “As I Lay Dying,” directed by Academy Award nominated actor James Franco. The movie, based on Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner’s Novel, was partially filmed in Leake County.
The following day, beginning at 9am Saturday, The Old School Arts Festival will launch a complimentary tapestry of events including visual artists’ booths featuring oil paintings, pottery, jewelry, woodworking, photography and more. Musical artists from a wide spectrum of genres including Southern Gospel, R & B, Bluegrass, Contemporary Christian, African Drumming and beyond will be performing throughout the day. There will be a “Kid’s Zone” provided, and a “Drunk Driving” obstacle course as part of the fun and educational component as well.
The festival will culminate on Saturday evening with “Elvis: A Night With The King,” an interactive tribute to the late Elvis Presley on the anniversary of his death. The cost for this show is $10 per person, and all proceeds from the festival will support the renovation efforts for the Carthage Old School. Tickets are on sale now. For more information about the festival, contact Russell Baty at 601-267-6764, carthagemainstre@bellsouth.net
