RE: 2014 Hwy 80 Songwriters Fest

Meridian Main Street, in partnership with Lauderdale County Tourism, and local sponsors proudly invite you to enjoy the Hwy 80 Songwriters Fest on October 24-25, 2014 at three venues (Weidmann's, The Brickhaus Bar & Grill and Faces Lounge) in downtown Meridian, Mississippi, from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Eighteen songwriters from Alabama and Mississippi include Steve Deaton, Scott Albert Johnson, accompanied by Chalmers Davis, Bob Ray, Wes Lee, Joe Plunkett, Zachary Diedrich, Melissa Joiner, Bryan Hayes, Jim Oakes, Derek Norsworthy, Christina Christian, Abigail Osteen, Taylor Craven, Thomas Jackson, and more.

The Hwy 80 Songwriting Workshop facilitator, Marty Gamblin, Executive Director for the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Center said, "Songwriters are the very backbone of the creative process." Through The Montgomery Institute's West Alabama/East Mississippi Initiative to build rural communities through creative economic development, and brainstorming, partnerships formed between Mississippi and Alabama and the first Highway 80 "Tastes" were held in Demopolis, AL and Meridian, MS in 2013.

"We're very excited to be included as a venue for the Hwy 80 Songwriters Festival," said Ken Flynt, co-owner of The Brickhaus. "I made it to Demopolis last year and was very impressed by the talent. Music and songwriting is an important part of our Southern Culture and the Brickhaus is committed to fostering the Music Scene in East Mississippi and West Alabama."

The mission of the Hwy 80 Songwriters Fest is to provide songwriters opportunities to expand their network and a stage to showcase original works in communities along the Highway 80 corridor. The educational aspect will have songwriters and students writing lyrics and putting them to music at Poplar Springs Elementary School. The two-hour workshop held by Marty Gamblin, will be held at Union Station Saturday the 25th at 10:00 a.m. The workshop is open to anyone wanting to learn more about songwriting and the business of songwriting. Reaching across the state line expands tourism, and gives smaller rural communities along the Hwy. 80 corridor an opportunity to highlight their area by participating at host songwriter venues. This is a wonderful collaboration bringing the talents of songwriters to the place that can best showcase their work.

59Twenty Music Festival Line Up Announced - 2014

On the front lawn of City Hall Meridian, MS
59Twenty Music Festival Line Up Announced

Meridian, MS - The 59Twenty Music Festival was started in 2011 by the Young Professionals of Meridian as a fundraiser to support the Care Lodge, a local domestic violence shelter serving a nine county area in East Mississippi. The next event will be held Saturday, March 29, 2014, on the front lawn of City Hall. The festival will feature four bands on the main stage from 1 p.m. until 11 p.m., as well as local artists performing on a second stage between acts.

Headlining the event this year will be the Marshall Tucker Band. The six-man group has been touring the nation since the early 70's and is still led by founding member Doug Gray. They play songs that have stood the test of time, and that every generation is sure to recognize, like "Can't you See," "Fire On the Mountain," and "Heard It In a Love Song."

Hitting the main stage, prior to the Marshall Tucker Band, will be the return of Rosco Bandana. "The band was such a huge hit last year that our committee decided we had to try and bring them back. I think every person that attended left there a Rosco Bandana's fan," said YPM President Meredith Rea.

Also playing on the main stage will be Nelo and Surviving Allison. Nelo, an alternative rock band from Dallas, TX, was formed in 2005 and has played at venues such as Austin's SXSW Music Conference and Austin City Limits Festival. Surviving Allison is a high energy, pop-rock band from North Mississippi. In 2012 they participated in five battle of the band contests and won all five.

This year's 59Twenty Music Festival is sure to cater to a wide range of musical tastes. As always, this if a family friendly event and children 12 and under enter for free. There will be plenty of food, drink and entertainment for everyone to enjoy. Tickets are $20 in advance and $30 at the gate. Tickets can be purchased locally at Harry Mayer Clothiers, Meridian Underground Music, and the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation. Online tickets are available at or
