A new rainfall observing network is offering the chance for everyone to get involved in the weather forecasting process, and the only requirement is the want to help out.

The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network, or CoCoRaHS, is a precipitation measuring network that is already in place in 34 states. Mississippi is one of two states to be added to the network during the remainder of 2008 and serves as an opportunity for everyone to get involved in the process of weather forecasting.

The hope is to increase the density of precipitation data across the country. The National Weather Service will be able to use the information provided by the network to make better river level forecasts. Hail and rainfall information can also be used to issue severe weather and flood warnings when necessary.

No matter your age or background, you can join the network. Coordinators ask that you purchase a specified rain gauge so that the data is uniform with data from other locations.

This network is a good opportunity to get involved and have fun while learning more about the science of meteorology, and teachers are encouraged to use the network as a teaching tool for students.

If you are interested in joining or want more information, feel free to visit the CoCoRaHS website at www.cocorahs.org.
