Lauderdale County has earned the designation of "Storm Ready Community. That certification came Tuesday from the National Weather Service in Jackson.
The weather service calls it a partnership between it and local emergency management, and said it signifies Lauderdale County is doing its job well.
"Storm Ready is not that everybody in the county's going to get a personal knock on the door or a phone call. But it is saying that the local officials received the weather warnings and watches through multiple means. They monitor the weather through many different means," said Stephen Wilkinson of the National Weather Service-Jackson. "And they also take the warnings that we issue and serve as a point to disseminate those warnings out to entities in the community, such as the fire departments, the hospitals, and the schools, things like that."
Wilkinson said an official ceremony is planned for Aug. 20 to mark the accomplishment.
