After seeing some improvements to the 2007 drought in July, due to rainfall, the hot and dry pattern now in early August is making matters worse.
The newly released data from the U.S. Drought Monitor has placed most of west Alabama back under a stage 3 extreme drought, along with the small section of east Mississippi, west of U.S. Highway 45.
Areas in southwest Alabama and the rest of eastern Mississippi are back under a stage 2 severe drought. Stage 1 moderate drought conditions remain over central Mississippi.
