Officials Close 5 Long Island Beaches

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- Officials in Nassau County have
temporarily closed five beaches to swimming over bacteria concerns
following rainstorms.

The five beaches closed Sunday are on the south shore of Long
Island. They include Philip Healey Beach, Merrick Estates Civic
Association, Island Park Beach, Hewlett Point Beach and Biltmore
Beach Club.

Storm water runoff after heavy rains can wash things into the
water, but health authorities are especially concerned about
bacteria from sewage.
