A storm survey team from the National Weather Service in Mobile confirmed Monday that storm damage in Stone County was caused by a tornado Sunday afternoon.

The tornado touched down at 4:19 PM Sunday just southwest of Pine Avenue in the town of McHenry. The tornado lifted five minutes later along Wire Road East near Highway 49. The length of the tornado's path was 2.23 miles, and the twister was 100 yards -- the length of a football field -- across. Winds were estimated at 86-110 mph, making the tornado an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

Trees were snapped in their middles and uprooted, and several homes were damaged. One home had the roof almost completely removed.

A Tornado Warning had been issued by the National Weather Service about ten minutes before the tornado struck.
