Thursday, August 15 Forecast Discussion

What a difference a day makes! Yesterday we were dealing with cool conditions with clouds and rain departing. Today, plentiful sunshine with low humidity and temperatures making it feel like it is Fall outside! High pressure has set up shop over the Ohio River Valley, and will remain there the next couple of days. The result for us is northerly winds bringing cooler and drier air into the area. Dew points have dropped into the 60s, which is a big difference from the 70s we have been dealing with for weeks.

The front that brought all of the rain is hugging the coast, and will remain there into the weekend. Our tropical wave over the Caribbean has become less impressive on satellite as far as organization, but convection has started to redevelop in the wave. It will cross the Yucatan this evening into Friday morning and then emerge into the southern Gulf of Mexico. From there, it could continue moving west towards Mexico, turn towards the central Gulf Coast, or both as moisture is drawn north but the center moves west. There are still a lot of questions with this storm, and all we can do for now is watch and wait.
