Tuesday Evening Weather Discussion

The axis of a low pressure trough has passed to our east and a high pressure ridge is beginning to build into the Deep South from the west. On the forward side of the high pressure ridge, northwesterly air flow from the ground up to around 50,000 feet is cooling the entire atmosphere from top to bottom across the eastern United States. Sinking air associated with the high pressure will help to decrease the cloud layer by decreasing the humidity within that layer of the atmosphere and by actually pushing the clouds to our east. The deep northwesterly wind flow is forecasted to persist through Friday before becoming more southwesterly above 10,000 feet and more southerly closer to the ground. At that point temperatures will warm by a process called warm air advection, but until then only the sun will warm us from near-freezing temperatures in the early mornings into the lower 60's at best. The warmer wind that sets up on Friday will continue through the weekend, but another low pressure trough will swing through the South on Monday. That will bring another round of rain to our area. Early wind profile forecasts suggest sufficient directional wind shear for tornadoes with Monday's system. Atmospheric stability forecasts, however, suggest an overall stable environment that does not lend itself to severe weather. The forecasts could change, and any significant low-level warming could decrease stability and bring about a threat for severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes on Monday. Again, that threat appears to be almost zero at this point, but a lot can change between now and Monday.
