Tuesday Evening Weather Discussion

Sun shined through breaks in the clouds on our Tuesday, but temperatures were comfortably cool this afternoon after lows dropped into the high 30's and low 40's early Tuesday morning. The clouds were the result of shallow moisture and lift triggered by a mid-level low pressure wave and an upper level wind max riding the jet stream eastward. Both of those features will migrate east of us tomorrow and take the clouds with them. That mid-level low pressure wave is amplifying as a pocket of swirl in the middle atmosphere drops into the base of that wave. In response, a mid-level high pressure ridge is also amplifying as it slides east with the flow. Amplifying means it is strengthening, so a strengthening high pressure ridge moving our way sets us up for a sunny Wednesday and Thanksgiving with seasonably cold mornings and afternoons warming to around 70. Another low pressure wave is over the Northern Rockies tonight, and that will approach our area late this week. This feature will drive a cold front through our area on Friday and bring down temperatures this weekend. The moisture should be sufficient for an increase in clouds on Friday, and there is a narrow window of opportunity where a shower or two cannot be ruled out on Friday. Moisture is going to be limited, though, and my current thinking is that we likely will stay dry on Friday. High pressure takes over on Saturday, so the clouds should clear out and the temperatures will be cold down the eastern flank of the high pressure area. The high pressure will slide eastward Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will warm and humidity will increase on the western flank of the high to set us up for some rain with the next low pressure wave that moves through Tuesday.
