(AP) -- The National Hurricane Center offers these tips in preparing for a big storm:
--Securely fasten impact-resistant shutters over all large windows and glass doors. Shutters can be made from metal or plywood.
--Discuss the type of hazards that could affect your family. Know your home's vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind.
--Locate the safest areas in your home or community.
--Post emergency telephone numbers by your phones and make sure your children know how and when to call 911.
--Stock nonperishable emergency supplies and a disaster supply kit, containing water, food, first-aid supplies, cash and other items to last for three to seven days.
--Make sure cars have a full tank of gas.
--Determine escape routes from your home and places to meet. These should be measured in tens of miles rather than hundreds of miles.
--If ordered to evacuate, do not delay your departure.
--Check your insurance coverage -- flood damage is not usually covered by homeowners insurance.
--Take first aid, CPR and disaster preparedness classes.
