Hurricane Season Opens but Ops Center Not Done

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Hurricane season has started, but New Orleans' emergency operations center is still a work in progress.

Emergency preparedness chief Jerry Sneed says extra room is being provided at City Hall for the hub. But he's not sure when the center, once hoped to be done by the start of storm season, will be finished.

He says the size and layout of a facility help officials do their jobs.

Ceeon Quiett, a spokeswoman for Mayor Ray Nagin, says the city operated from the current center last year -- when New Orleans was evacuated for Hurricane Gustav -- and has "no reservations" about its effectiveness this year.

She said the construction team has had "a few delays" but that the overhaul work continues.
