Hurricane Bill Gathers Strength

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- The first hurricane of the Atlantic season is expected to become a major storm in the next couple of days, with winds topping 110 mph.

But forecasters say it's too soon to tell what effect Hurricane Bill might have on the U.S. mainland.

Bill remains far out in the ocean today, gaining power and moving on a track that forecasters said could take it close to Bermuda by the end of the week.

Bill is a large system, about 300 miles across, so Bermuda faces a potential threat even if the Atlantic island avoids a direct hit.
