Fort Collins, CO Colorado State University has unveiled its first preseason hurricane forecast. Here is what they are forecasting:
9 Named Storms
1 Major Hurricane
The probability of a storm making landfall on the Gulf Coast by intensity:
Tropical Storm: 41%
Major Hurricane: 19%
All numbers are below averages due to the onset of El Niño in the Pacific and cool Atlantic Ocean temperatures. Researchers believe that the warmer Pacific Ocean and cooler Atlantic Ocean will focus development of storms this year in the Pacific Ocean. Typically, El Niño cause the Atlantic season to be below normal.
Colorado State University releases its forecast every year in April and follows with subsequent forecasts as the season approaches and during the season.
