Hurricane Isaac: Tuesday Evening Update

Hurricane Isaac made landfall just before 7 PM Tuesday over southeastern Louisiana near the Mouth of the Mississippi River. Following landfall, Isaac slowed to a wobbling drift and wobbled off the coast and back over the Gulf of Mexico this evening.

A slow moving system over the water maintains potential for further strengthening and will also mean a longer period of wind and heavy rain for the areas in the impact zones.

Passing squalls will bring gusty winds and brief periods of heavy rain over East Mississippi and West Alabama. The wind will pick up to around 25-35 mph around Meridian. Areas south and southwest of Meridian could see winds approach 40-45 mph. The passing rain bands will also bring the potential for tornadoes through Wednesday evening. Rain could become more widespread over our area later Wednesday as the low pressure weakens slightly and loses its strong hold on the heavy rain near Isaac's core.

The strongest wind and heaviest rain will certainly be well south of us. Dry air feeding into Isaac's north side has helped to limit a lot of active weather over central Mississippi. As the storm's center tracks northward along the Mississippi River Wednesday the weather in our area could become considerably more active.

A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 7 AM Wednesday for southern parts of our area. Wayne and Jones counties in Mississippi along with Choctaw and Clarke counties in Alabama. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until Thursday evening for most of the Mississippi counties in our area including Lauderdale, Clarke, Jasper, Jones, Kemper, Neshoba, Newton, Scott, Smith, and Wayne counties. Our Alabama area is not included in the Flash Flood Watch.
