As Tropical Storm Debby stalks the Florida Gulf Coast, our focus turns away from the tropics and to the dangerous heat that could be in our area later this week. The high pressure that has stayed over our area for more than a week relaxed a bit today, but it will rebuild later this week and could grow stronger than its previous reign over our area. Beneath the high, we will sizzle in the intense heat that defines a Mississippi Summer. Temperatures could be over 100 degrees this weekend, and the heat index could be closer to 110 during the hottest part of the days. Remember to keep yourself hydrated by drinking water with occasional sports drinks like Powerade or Gatorade. Also be sure to eat well, and if you will be outside take frequent cool breaks in the swimming pool or in the air conditioning. Don't overdo it while you are outside, and if you can do those outdoor tasks early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are not so hot.

Tropical Storm Debby's journey toward the Florida Big Bend will be a slow one, but landfall will likely happen between Apalachicola and the Suwanne River on Wednesday afternoon or evening. No impacts on East Mississippi and West Alabama are likely, but over Florida the threat continues for tornadoes and flooding rains from near Tallahassee to Jacksonville and south toward Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers, and Fort Lauderdale.
