MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Staff with the Meridian Public School District are making sure that children are able to continue learning over the summer.

Staff set up tents outside T.J. Harris Lower Elementary School and gave parents ‘Summer Enrichment Packets’ for their kids. The bags contained things like learning booklets, calculators, crayons and novels.

“Meridian Public School District is committed to our students and whatever it takes to make sure that they have what they need to continue learning in a fun and engaging way, we are committed to that and so that’s what this is really all about,” says Melody Craft, the secondary curriculum director with MPSD.

With a shortened school year due to COVID-19, Craft says it's extra important to keep young minds learning.

“It’s important for them to keep their brains active. And so a lot of the things that we provided them are just fun learning tasks. And then we’re encouraging them to read,” Craft explains. “We want their brains to stay active during the summer months so that they’re prepared to enter back in school when we do start back.”

If you were not able to pick up a Summer Enrichment Packet Tuesday, there may be smaller events over the summer where you can get one.
