MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Volunteer firefighters learned about landing zones and how to properly guide an emergency helicopter to a scene Monday evening.

The Meridian Airport based PHI Air Medical team presented the training on things like finding the perfect landing zone and how to interact with the aircraft and the crew.

After a presentation, the group headed to a nearby parking lot to practice what they learned with the PHI helicopter coming in for a landing.

LEMA Director Odie Barrett says this type of training is essential for emergency situations.

“You may be in a place that really doesn’t have a nice area like we have here. If the road is wide enough and the trees aren’t crowding the road, we could land on the highway. Or we might have to transport from that particular scene by ambulance to get them to a helicopter,” Barrett says.

Barrett says they plan on continuing this training in the future.
