KEMPER COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) - A former Kemper County High School teacher was arrested Friday morning on charges of sexual battery.

Sheriff James Moore says Simeon T. Weatherby, 39, was arrested after an investigation involving Weatherby and a student under the age of 18.

Authorities say they were alerted to unusual activity involving Weatherby and the student at Kemper Lake.

“Officers went out to do a welfare check. At that checking, officers found some things that didn’t make sense. At that point, we launched the investigation,” Moore says.

Simeon Weatherby is charged with sexual battery because he was a person in position of power and trust and the victim was under 18.

“There is a process you have to go through to seek a warrant for a school teacher. We did that process. We had a probable cause hearing. Evidence led to the judge issuing a warrant and we processed that warrant Friday,” Moore explains.

Weatherby’s bond was $20,000. He has since bonded out of jail.
