NEWTON, Miss. (WTOK) - Kay Killens has been with the Newton Municipal School District for over 25 years. She is now retiring from her job as principal of Newton Elementary School.

“I’ve been the principal at the school for 5 years and I just completed my 27th year in the district,” Killens says.

Cars lined up and traveled from the elementary school to the NMSD Central Office to greet Killens Friday. The people in the cars had balloons, signs and gifts.

“I was so totally, completely caught off guard. I never even suspected anything,” Killens says. “I thought I was coming in to work on a federal programs report and they totally got me.”

Killens says she will always cherish her memories of working in the Newton Municipal School District.

“It means everything because this community and these people have been my family for the last 27 years. And when you’re committed and you really love something, when you go home, you don’t forget about it. It’s part of who you are every day. And so even though I’m going home, they’re going to always be in my heart.”

Killens’ family was in on the surprise and were at the parade.
