Meridian Fire Department looks to recruit new firefighters
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -The Meridian Fire Department is changing how it recruits new firefighters.
Applications were previously accepted only a few months out of the year, but now they will be accepted all year long.
Meridian Fire Chief Ricky Leister says this will open up the opportunity to fit more schedules.
“The fire department is short here in Meridian, but the fire service across the country is running into shortages,” Leister explains. “We are experiencing it everywhere and we’re just trying to find new ways to where we can get that recruitment up.”
Leister says this new application process will allow them to recruit more people that the department might have missed out on otherwise.
“I’m a firm believer that we have missed out on a lot of really great candidates because they didn’t want to wait around three or four months,” Leister explains. “This gives them the opportunity to go ahead and try that without waiting the three or four months.”
If you think you have what it takes or have been thinking about becoming a firefighter, Leister says there’s no reason not to go ahead and put in an application.
“Put in your application and try it. It’s a testing process it’s not just an open door. You have to pass a written, computer generated test at MCC, then you have to pass a physical agility test here,” Leister says.
If you would like to be at Meridian fire fighter, you can pick up an application at the Civil Service Office which is on the first floor of Meridian City Hall at 601 23rd Avenue.
