Bill Davis Invitational kicks off with Friday qualifying round
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - 88 golfers teed off at Northwood Country Club on Friday for the club’s annual Bill Davis Invitational.
This year’s tournament, which kicked off Friday and goes until Sunday, will be played in a bracket style format. After Friday’s qualifying round concluded, teams were split into groups of eight based on similar scores.
“After the qualifying round we’ll group teams into eight-person brackets similar to March Madness. The one seed plays the eight seed and all the way through” Northwood golf pro Kyle Carpenter explained. “If a team loses on Saturday, they get moved to a consolation bracket and we play out from there.”
With the tournament taking place Fourth of July weekend and this time of the year bringing out humid weather, Carpenter said he was pleased with the turnout for this year’s tournament.
“We were four teams short of a full field and during this time of the year with the weather forecast you can’t ask for more than 88 players to play,” Carpenter said. “We’re just trying to give people something normal during this time and with golf thankfully that’s something we can do.”
Players ranging in age from 15 to late 70s signed up to compete in the tournament. Last year’s champions, Alex Weddington and David Ray, shot a 63 to finish off Friday’s qualifying round and will be the No. 1 seed in the top bracket.
Carpenter believes that with the field of play, the tournament could come down to the wire.
“There are some good teams out there. It’s going to be close,” Carpenter said. “You will probably see some teams shooting 64, 65 today so it will be a real touch challenge going into match play.”
