Man arrested after early morning chase
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - One man is behind bars after leading local authorities on a high-speed chase throughout the city of Meridian early Monday morning.
It started around 3:30 a.m. near the Waffle House on Roebuck Dr.
Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says the Meridian Police Department initiated the chase, which lasted nearly an hour, but never left city limits.
“The entire pursuit covered more than half the city of Meridian,” Calhoun says.
Speeds of 110 mph were reached through neighborhood streets. There was almost no traffic on the road that early in the morning.
Calhoun says Liltavious Smith, 28, came close to going outside of the city limits, but never did. Deputies got involved once the lead pursuit vehicle for the Meridian Police Department wrecked near Dairy Queen.
“Ultimately a deputy was able to get the vehicle spiked on Chandler Rd. The subject went another mile before he got out of the vehicle and ran. The police department K9 apprehended the individual,” Calhoun says.
Liltavious Cordez Smith is charged with two counts of fleeing and eluding and one count of distribution of a controlled substance.
“It was a dangerous situation with an individual who was determined to get away. It doesn’t matter. We are going to continue to do our job. We are going to hold you accountable and don’t think you are going to outrun us or out last us,” Calhoun says. “It’s a great example of city and county working together.”
Smith’s total bond is $95,000.
