Dangerous heat builds this weekend
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Friday afternoon felt like a furnace on high with heat indices of 105-110 degrees. This is in sharp contrast to the rain-cooled mugginess of the week leading up to this sudden change.
Dangerous Heat This Weekend
The heat is just starting. Heat index values of 105-110 degrees are likely on both Saturday and Sunday. The hottest times of day will be between 10 AM and 6 PM. Heat indices that high increase the potential for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To avoid these medical situations, be sure to limit the amount of time you spend outdoors. If you have to be outdoors, make sure you’re well hydrated and you take frequent cool breaks in the air conditioning. Make sure you don’t overexert yourself when you are outside.
Record-breaking heat is unlikely, but this will be the warmest weather we have experience since early October of last year.
Showers Won’t Be Very Helpful
The extreme heat will last throughout much of next week. While stray pop-up showers and thunderstorms are possible each day, rain will be minimal and not helpful in taming the heat. Our biggest shot at rain through next Friday comes on Sunday. That’s when a weak upper-level disturbance tracks over the top of us. Even then, showers and thunderstorms will be few and not necessarily for everyone.
Watch The Air Conditioning
Be mindful of your air conditioning! Turning the thermostat down to cooler temperatures will drive up your electric bills significantly. Holding the air conditioner a little higher and using fans can help you out a lot. If you are away from home, you can also turn up the thermostat to a warmer temperature while you are away. That will help ease the increasing electric bills.
The Next 24 Hours
This evening will be mostly clear. We will cool into the lower 80s through 10 PM. The rest of tonight will be mostly clear. Low temperatures will be near 74 degrees. Saturday will be mostly sunny with a small chance for a stray shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon. The high temperature will be near 96 degrees. The heat index will be 105-110 degrees.
