Dangerous heat expected this weekend and into next week
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Happy Friday! A few showers and storms have developed this morning, but most of us are dry. Any showers and storms that have developed overnight should fizzle out by 8 a.m. We’ll see a chance of scattered showers and storms again this afternoon thanks to daytime heating. Temperatures will climb into the low-90s with heat index values as high as 100. A shower will be possible early this evening, but we look to see a mainly dry nighttime with temperatures dropping into the low-70s by sunrise on Saturday.
Heat will increase heading into the weekend. Highs on Saturday will be in the mid-90s with heat indices as high as 105. We’ll get even warmer heading into Sunday, with heat index values expected to climb as high as 108. There will be a chance of isolated showers and storms Saturday afternoon and then a chance of scattered showers and storms Sunday afternoon. Most of the weekend will be dry. We’ll see a chance of isolated showers Monday afternoon, with heat indices climbing up to 108 degrees again.
High temperatures will climb into the upper-90s to near 100 degrees Tuesday through Thursday. Heat index values during this time frame could climb all the way up to 110 degrees, and maybe even slightly higher than that in one or two spots. A pop-up shower or storm will be possible on each of those afternoons. This will be some dangerous heat. Make sure to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and if you have to work outdoors, make sure to take frequent breaks in an air conditioned location.
