Food truck park coming to downtown Meridian
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Food trucks will now be able to gather in downtown Meridian after the city council passed a proposal for a food truck park. For those interested in setting their business up there, you need to reach out to Meridian Community Development.
“It’s a special use permit that’s granted for the food truck park and then once that happens, there’s a committee that does review everything to make sure they have everything in line that would be needed to establish it, and then from there once it’s approved, two or more vendors will be able to set up,” says Laura Carmichael, community development director for the city of Meridian.
City officials say this will help provide economic growth to the city.
“We’re really excited to see that excitement come to downtown Meridian hopefully to build foot traffic and to also encourage support and growth for our local vendors,” Carmichael says.
Adam Taylor is the owner of Pop’s Hot Dog and Catering, which is a food cart that has been setting up in Dumont Plaza.
“We serve 100% beef hot dogs, our buns are locally baked, our sausage dogs are locally sourced out of a meat market in Florence, Mississippi,” Taylor says. “So what we’re trying to do, even though it’s a hot dog cart and there could be some negative connotations to that, we try to serve the best ingredients, we try to make sure that everything we do is to a professional standard.”
Taylor says he is excited to see the food truck park come together and appreciates the city for their help.
“I do appreciate the city doing that for the food trucks, and I do have to say that the city has bent over backwards to help us,” Taylor says.
The food truck park will be located on 5th Street between 23rd and 25th Avenue in downtown Meridian.
