Vehicle thefts increase in Meridian
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Police are urging people to not leave valuables in their vehicles and to make sure the doors are locked.
The summer months can lead to a spike in certain crimes, and for the Meridian Police Department, a crime they see more often in this season is vehicle burglary. According to Interim Chief Charles Coleman, in the month of June, Meridian had a total of 29 car burglaries, 6 of them were on Frontage Road. Coleman said the department has already begun a series of protocols to protect citizens and shared ways they can protect themselves.
“We have singled out the areas where the burglaries are occurring. We are increasing patrol in those areas. We are hoping to have cameras in place that would help us aid in apprehend some of these suspects. Don’t leave your keys in the car. Make sure your car is locked. Don’t leave valuables, purses and shopping bags out in the open. I would encourage you to secure them in your truck,” said Interim Chief Charles Coleman.
Coleman said the best way to minimize the risk of burglary is to lock vehicle doors and windows.
