The MAX hosts 2nd annual Arts Integration Day
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Local teachers participated in a hands-on fine arts refresher course in downtown Meridian Monday as they gear up for a new school year.
More than 20 teachers spent a fun and educational day at The MAX to learn new and creative ways of using the arts in the classroom. The teachers learned about dancing, painting and acting as part of the second annual Arts Integration Day. The training is part of the "Any Given Child" initiative, where educators are taught how to add the four elements of art: drama, visual art, music, and dancing to their core curriculum. Arts coordinator Clair Huff says teachers will teach students these important elements both in-person and through distance learning this year.
“Some of the strategies that the teachers are learning today can be applied in a traditional classroom or in distant learning. The drama group behind us decided to use a mask because many of us will be wearing a mask in our classrooms this year. What a brilliant way to take something that we’re going to have to deal with and use it as an art form in your classrooms,” said arts coordinator Clair Huff.
Huff also said Meridian is one of 23 cities in the nation participating in the initiative to integrate arts in pre-k through eighth grades.
