MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The Meridian Museum of Art and the Meridian Housing Authority teamed up Wednesday to put on an art camp.

Children came to the MHA Envision Center and learned from Meridian Museum of Art staff about Faith Ringgold, an artist known for her story quilts. Organizers say the event was an opportunity for the children to express themselves through art.

“It’s important for the children to know that all cultures have art and that we’re all where we came from and the way that we express that is through our creativity,” says Marsha Iverson, the education consultant with the Meridian Museum of Art. “We feel like there is a cultural divide in some aspects of the city and we’re trying to bridge that beginning with our children because we know the parents are going to listen to the children, and we’ve had parents helping their children here today and that helps bridge that gap so much better.”

This event was part of an outreach effort from the Meridian Museum of Art to bring art directly to the community.
