Mississippi Sales Tax Holiday is Friday and Saturday
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The 2020 Mississippi Sales Tax Holiday Friday and Saturday is an opportunity for customers to get discounts on many products. The sales tax exemption applies to clothing, footwear and school supplies, if the price of a single item is less than $100.
“It’s a good time for people to come in and get seven percent off of their sales. In these times we all need to save money when we can,” says Robbie Hales, the co-owner of the Liberty Shop. “We just invite everybody to come, it’s always so good to see everybody, it’s kind of like a celebration. We get to see people that perhaps we only get to see once a year, so we invite everybody to come.”
The Sales Tax Holiday was created in 2009 and school supplies were added to the list of eligible items in 2019.
“It’s always a good weekend, gets a lot of people out,” says Justin Dear, the manager/buyer at LOEB’S. “We sell a lot of book bags this time of the year, it’s a good time to take advantage of the sales tax off of everything throughout the store. We try to offer that to the customers, make it less hectic on them as well as the sales staff here.”
Local business owners we spoke to say they are excited to have their customers take advantage of these discounts.
“We always have that $99 special. So if you’re buying one of those specials, you’re going to get $7 off of it,” Hales says. “But we also will have some specials on some t-shirts, Friday school t-shirts and that type thing.”
“You get an extra discount on top of some of our clearance items going on throughout the store,” says Dear. “We have a great speaker that we’re going to do for a gift with purchase with every book bag this year.”
