MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -A first-term city council member has announced Thursday he plans to run for a higher position in the city’s government.

Ward 5 City Councilman Weston Lindemann says he’s running for the mayor of Meridian in 2021.

“There’s a number of things that I’ll be sharing with the citizens of Meridian, including my record over the past three years and things I’ve stood for and fought for the citizens,” said Lindemann.

Lindemann made the announcement to Newscenter 11 after a council meeting. The Meridian native says he has been able to shed light on a number of issues as councilman and wants to be able to continue leading the city as mayor.

“I think people know and understand I’ve been an advocate for them and I look forward to sharing with them the entirety of my message, and why I think I should be the next mayor of Meridian,” said Lindemann.

Lindemann said he has been contemplating running for mayor for a while. He joins current Mayor Percy Bland and former Ward 2 councilman Tyrone Johnson in the 2021 mayoral race.

Lindemann made his first run for public office in 2017, winning the Ward 5 seat on the Meridian City Council.
