Meridian leaders prepare for special election
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Meridian city leaders are asking residents to participate in a special election that determines the relationship between Mississippi Power and the city.
Chief Administrative Officer Eddie Kelly says every 25 years, the city has to re-sign an agreement with Mississippi Power so the company can do business within the city limits.
Residents will vote on whether or not they approve granting the company another 25-year franchise. Mississippi Power pays the city a 3% franchise fee.
“We think that passing this is going to be good for the city. If we do not get this passed, it will take a definite hit to the city’s budget,” said Kelly.
The election is Tuesday, August 4.
Ward 1, Precinct 1-A, Ward 5, Precinct 5-D, and Ward 5, Precinct 5-E will vote on the first floor of City Hall. For other precinct locations, visit this link.
