Montgomery Institute honors late congressman for 100th birthday
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The Montgomery Institute honored the legacy of the late congressman G.V. Sonny Montgomery during what would have been his 100th birthday.
Patriot, veteran, and leader are just three words to describe Congressman Montgomery who passed away in 2006. He served 10 years as a Mississippi State Senator followed by 30 years as a U.S. Congressman. While in Congress, he served as chairman of the House of Veteran’s Affairs Committee for 12 years. Due to COVID-19, the celebration of Montgomery’s birthday was postponed but that didn’t stop friends from sharing stories of his life.
“It was always amazing how people would recognize Congressman Montgomery in the airport. One of his greatest achievements was the creation of the Montgomery G.I. bill which helped so many military people with their education,” said President of Montgomery Institute, C.D. Smith.
Part of the mission of The Montgomery Institute is to honor his legacy and pass it on to future generations. President of Montgomery Institute, C.D. Smith said after so many years Montgomery’s legacy continues to make an impact across the nation.
