Madelyn Sherrill Bedwell
Madelyn Sherrill Bedwell
On August 1, 2020, Madelyn Sherrill Bedwell passed away at her home after a hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer. She was just 2 ½ weeks shy of her 72nd birthday.
Madelyn was born August 17, 1948 in Ward , AL to Ralph and Theo Sherrill. She graduated from Sumter County High School and received her BS in secondary education from the University of West Alabama. She later earned a Master of Social Work from the University of Alabama. Madelyn had a 30 year long career at the Choctaw County Department of Human Resources. After retiring, she spent her time doing what she loved. She enjoyed traveling with her husband Jim. They frequented their cabin in Missouri where they made some good friends and had many fun times. She also loved attending auctions and estate sales with Jim always at her side. All who knew Madelyn, were very aware of her love for antiques!
Madelyn was a loving mother, adoring grandmother, and devoted wife to Jim. Over the years, she loved watching her sons and grandsons play ball. She also enjoyed her FaceTime calls with her younger two grandchildren who did not live close enough to see often. They always brought such joy with every call or visit. Her love of music, especially all things Elvis and gospel, was known to many. Her sons and grandchildren entertained her with their beautiful voices and guitar playing. Even the youngest grandkids shared her appreciation for a good tune, and it seems they all were blessed with natural music ability which made Madelyn so very proud.
Across the country, Madelyn was known for her well bred line of Corgi dogs. Breeding Corgis was a passion and hobby she shared with her husband for over 20 years. Together they bred and raised many generations of beautiful dogs.
Everyone who knew Madelyn could see she was full of life, spirit, and spunk. She was a fighter through her battle with cancer until the very end. She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Hubert Sherrill, her mother, Mary Theo Sims, her brother Ralph Hughes Sherrill, and her niece Anna Louise Sherrill. She is survived by her husband James L., her two sons, Chadwick Ralph (Sherry) and John Clayton (Erica), and her five grandchildren, Branson Rhett, Nash Dillon, Austin Lockard, Kinsley Madynn, and Clayton Brooks.
Madelyn and her husband are forever grateful to her long time physician and friend, Dr. James Purdy. He was instrumental in her journey to MD Anderson and her course of treatment.
A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 4th at 10:00am at Shorts Cemetery in Ward, AL. Pallbearers are Branson Acton, Nash Acton, Austin Acton, Thomas McDamiel, Rodney Craft, and Danny Curtis. En lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Madelyn’s honor to Shorts Cemetery, Westside Church Children’s Fund (Willow Springs, MO), or charity of choice.
