KEMPER COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) - A 17-year-old is recovering after being shot multiple times Friday afternoon in Kemper County.

Frederick Nunn, 38, has been charged with shooting his teenage nephew on Highway 397 near the Winston County line.

Kemper County Sheriff James Moore says witnesses reported Nunn coming to his nephew’s home and asking for him to come outside.

Authorities say when the nephew walked outside Nunn drew a line in the dirt and dared him to cross it. Investigators say the 17-year-old crossed over the line and that’s when he was shot.

“The 17-year-old asked the uncle why he shot him. At that time, the uncle pointed the gun at him in his face,” Moore says. “The uncle’s defense is that he thought the young man had a gun and he was going to shoot him. During the investigation we didn’t find that to be true.”

The 17-year-old has undergone surgeries in Jackson and is making some progress.

“I’ve never experienced a time where someone actually drew a line in the dirt and dared someone to cross it. In school days you would say that playing and you may have a fist fight,” Moore explains. “I have not heard of a situation where that was done and someone was shot. And the person you shot was your 17-year-old nephew.”

Nunn has been charged with aggravated assault and has a $75,000 bond.
