Arson investigation underway following Toomsuba shooting
TOOMSUBA, Miss. (WTOK) - There are new details in a shooting that happened Tuesday night on Lauderdale Toomsuba Rd.
Authorities are now investigating a fire that was set at the shooting scene after deputies left.
Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says fire crews were called to the 8100 block of Lauderdale Toomsuba Rd. about an hour after deputies left the shooting scene.
Fire officials found a camper on fire at the residence where the shooting took place.
“We have reason to believe that camper trailer was set on fire. The arson investigator is working on that as well,” Calhoun says.
Deputies were originally called to the property after a woman was shot in the lower leg. Richard Watts, 51, was taken into custody at the residence and has been charged with felon possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm.
“There are potentially more charges to be filed. We are working on that,” Calhoun says.
The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The fire is being investigated as arson.
