Heat builds going into the weekend, Perseid meteor shower begins
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - We're warming, and humidity is slowly increasing now. Warm doesn't mean our days will be unpleasant.
Perseid Meteor Shower
The nights can be enjoyable, too. The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks next Tuesday night and Wednesday night. Meteors from this annual shower are already visible. On the peak nights, around 50 meteors per hour are possible. Some more active showers in the past have peaked with about 100 meteors per hour. You won’t see that many meteors tonight. Viewing will gradually improve as the waning gibbous moon grows smaller. Your best best will be to find a dark spot and sit with the moon behind a building. Also, don’t look at your phone too much. It doesn’t let your eyes adjust to the night sky.
The Next 24 Hours
Weather tonight looks great. Fair-weather clouds this evening will fade. Temperatures will drop into the mid-70s through 11 PM. The rest of tonight will be mostly clear. The low temperature will be near 69 degrees. Friday will be mostly sunny with a very small chance for a stray shower. The high temperature will be near 94 degrees. Heat indices can be closer to 100 degrees.
The weekend will be warm and mostly dry, though there is a small chance for a stray shower or two on both Saturday and Sunday. Highs will be in the mid-to-upper 90s with heat indices of 105-110 degrees. Morning lows will be in the mid-70s.
Rain Returns Next Week
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will return to the forecast on Monday. They will grow more widespread on Tuesday and Wednesday before diminishing on Thursday. We will still be warm, but the heat may be reduced slightly by the afternoon downpours. Highs can still be in the lower 90s. Humidity will increase drastically, too.
